This is Day 5 Part 2 of the In Search of Love and Riches solo campaign and is recorded using the Lonelog solo RPG notation.
Recap
A stampede thundering past presented an opportunity for Bayabas. Armed with his new spoils, he has set off for the closest settlement.
Spring 5 (Continued)
8pm
@ Bayabas approaches the settlement
? Settlement size? 1d6[3] Town.
? Settlement focus? 1d6[4] Military.
? Settlement quirk? 2d6[4] This Settlement only accepts a unique currency. You must exchange at a rate of ? 1d3[2] for 1 currency at a local bureau.
? Main faction? 2d6[11] Culture. A collection of artists, bards, writers or creative that seek to further culture.
=> As Bayabas crests over yet another hilltop, he was finally able to sight the nearby settlement once more. Nestled amongst the mountainous ridges, he saw few outright buildings within a perimeter of tall wooden fences. But it was surely a settlement across the way, for he could see people milling about or moving with purpose on the stone paths. Between him and his destination was what he hoped to be a sturdy rope bridge and a ravine with deceptively slow-moving clear-blue waters.
💭 **It’s a Settlement!**
> Bayabas has made it to a settlement! It’s a Town, which has a Marketplace size of 4 and can only have up to 3 major factions. I think he’s going to be relieved to sleep on a proper bed tonight.
> **Settlement Focus**
> I made the assumption that I roll to determine Settlement Focus, but this doesn’t seem to be explicitly stated on page 20 of the Hawker Expanded Alpha.
As the aspiring merchant neared the settlement, he could now clearly see that it was a town of sorts. There were more buildings than he thought, but few were standalone. Instead, many doors were built straight into the hillsides, like domiciles of woodland creatures. Bayabas adjusted the straps of his pack. Finally, he had made it out of the wilderness and found civilisation. He grinned broadly from ear to ear and pumped his legs as fast as he could past the surprisingly wide open gates and towards the Marketplace. Although it was Rest Day, he sensed that there were deals to be found.

> **Selling**
> I can sell as many items as I want, but I can only do it once per day. I can have multiple types of Goods listed under the same card, for buying and selling.
> **Exchange Rate**
> Because of the exchange rate in this settlement, I think it’s more favourable to sell items than to buy. The cost of Goods is based on the Tier multiplied by value of card, so Tier 1 \* Card 5 = 5 Humb, which becomes 10 Coins.
> So I’m going to avoid buying anything while here. If the exchange rate drops to 1 Coin: 1 Humba, then I’ll buy for sure. If it goes up to 3 Coin: 1 Humba, then it's definitely back to sleeping in the wilderness…
=> Bayabas showed off his wares, but the locals were hardly interested. As he walked from stall to stall, his fellow merchants waved him away. Eventually, he paused to rest by an unassuming door. A shadow fell over him, which took the gnome by surprise. A tall human towered. “I hear you have animal skins?”
“I have two,” Bayabas grinned, baring his teeth. “These are fresh,” he told her proudly.
He quickly presented one to her. She nodded approvingly. “I’ll take both. I’m a tanner.” She presented him with ten pieces of unfamiliar coins. He raised an inquiring eyebrow.
“We only use Humbs here,” said the human. “You can exchange it for Coin.”
“I’ll accept it, friend. I trust that you’re not putting tails in my stew,” Bayabas said silkily. Another nod from the human, then she had hauled the skins away. “No hard feelings,” she said as she left. What did that mean?
A quick trip to the town square, and he determined that, first, this town was named Lapugat—he marked this on his map—second, yes, Humb was a real currency, and, third, that they would exchange his Coins for Humb and back again, should he wish. Since he had some local coins, Bayabas decided he didn’t need to exchange his money for now. He still wasn’t sure what that woman meant about hard feelings, but he needed to find a place to rest first.
? Cost of Inn? 1d6[6] -> With exchange rate: 12 Coins per night
? Are there other Inns in town? 1d6[3] -> No but…
=> No, there aren’t any other Inns in town, but Bayabas runs into someone he knows who will offer him a place to rest for the night.
(Deciding this is a new character. Dwarf. He/Him.)
? Is NPC involved in the Culture Faction? 1d6[6] -> Yes and…
=> Yes, he is involved and he is a high-ranking member.
Rest: No nighttime encounter
> 💭 Supplies and Rest
> In a Settlement, we do not roll for Nighttime Encounters and can sleep soundly.
> I also did not mark Bayabas consuming a supply because his friend was hosting him. :) If I stayed at an Inn, dinner would have also been included in the fee.
=> Bayabas walked into the only Inn in town, only to discover the steep price of 6 Humb per night, which meant 12 of his regular Coins or roughly a third of all his wealth in the world. He pretended he forgot something and made his hasty exit. He wasn’t sure what to do next, as he roamed the stony paths. He could, of course, decide to sleep in the wilderness and see what happened…
“Bayabas!” Someone tapped him on the shoulder, which sent Bayabas stumbling forward by accident. He righted himself and turned on his heel, to see a dwarf.
“My mistake, old friend!” said [[Onyx-Blade]] the dwarf, heartily. Then he clapped Bayabas on the shoulder, which made him stumble once more. Perhaps the height difference between gnomes and dwarves was minimal, but in girth, there was a different story.
At once, his friend invited him to spend the night at his home, which was a large underground dwelling with multiple entrances. He led Bayabas to the main entrance which was in the middle of town. Bayabas was shocked to discover that his friend who only years earlier would sneak Bayabas all the alcohol and liquor he wanted as a youth was now a high-ranking member of the main faction of this town. His friend was only a few years older than him but so much further ahead in life.
His friend’s repeated reassurances that he had only gotten “lucky” did the opposite for Bayabas, as he wondered how he could make his own luck too.
Bayabas asked about the tanner’s comment. To which Onyx-Blade only rolled his eyes. “She’s only poking fun at ye. Treated hides become fancy rugs or leathers for fine clothing. Worth more than the Humbs she gave ye.”
For a second, Bayabas felt affronted. He had been cheated? “Of course, she does most of the work. And the smell, yeesh,” Onyx-Blade shook his head. “We best pay her well for her work.”
Bayabas’ heart softened at that. She did smell a little. And he was new to all this. He needed to stand his ground or haggle, if he felt he was owed more than he thought. Not feel sorry for himself after.
He pondered all this as he faded into sweet dreams.
